As I was browsing the news, this really caught my attention. The title itself can really tickle the curiosity of the readers. And as I read it, I really think that this article is sensationalized. The way it was written and presented, it makes a reader feel how heroic PNoy can be, that a man of a ‘great power’ is planning things like that. Not that I am saying that being a mechanic is not a good job, it’s just that in the society that we are in, people of great power doesn’t normally go like this.

In times when election keeps on getting closer each day, and the term of our president is coming to an end, I can’t help but wonder if this is one of the news to clear out his names and build a new one.

And the writer, Genalyn Kabiling, upon searching all the other articles she had written, all were saying good things about PNoy.

And there are more. My only concern is, as media practitioners, we have always the power to dictate what people should think about a certain thing. And we always have to be fair in writing because these people depend on us for news, for truth. We should always disclose our biases, and conflicts of interest.

I think that by publishing articles like this, the belief that healing through the medium of things like for example in this case, perfume, can make the readers, the people in general to have a stronger belief in them. Yes, it was mentioned that the creators of the perfume studied theta healing and engaged in Millennium Healing, however, why then no expert was interviewed or spoke up to prove that this perfume could actually help individuals? Of course the group create the perfume and so they have would surely say positive things about the result. But readers need more proof, or someone with real credibility that could assure them that everything the group said is true and effective.

Aside from strengthening supernatural beliefs, to me, this article just advertises this group and their product. Of course, people love this kind of thing, it tickles and wakes their curiosity. Filipinos are also fond of these stuffs. But then again, as a student studying media, I know that we have to be careful in the stuffs we write and publish. We have to be sure we just don’t publish for our own selfish reasons. We must publish always because the information we have gathered is the truth and will help each individual and the nation as a whole. Deception is a crime, leading people into believing a lie is a crime.

Now that it is summer to those people and students who did not go through the Academic Calendar Shift, people are fond into looking out for tips and guides on what to do this summer. And what else can be more encouraging and inspiring but an article speaking of stars sharing their secrets on how to be healthy? Rappler in this article is very seasonal yet it violated the advertorial part of ethics where we, as media practitioners must always be careful in the setting and pictures that we post unless we promote and indicate them.

In the first 4 photos of Rappler to Paulo Avelino, Jessy Mendiola, Elmo Magalona, and James Reid, they all have the same background where at their back is an advertisement of Century Tuna, which we all know promotes healthy living too. Very exact with the theme, huh?

For this to be acceptable, they should have taken another photo or post another picture of those stars rather than what is posted. This is a shameless plug of the product even without the article saying it.  And with some of the stars answering “eating healthy foods” they could mistakenly think that it is Century Tuna that they eat to help them be fit and at the same time, healthy.

8th Media Monitor in Comm 110 Ethics Class

I found this channel on Youtube which I think is very unethical and bad for the audience, considering that people can easily access sites like this. This channel is Tomo News where as written in their description:

The first time I found this, I thought this could be a really good platform of showing news since it can be fun and entertaining to the young adults as well as the kids who don’t really enjoy watching the news. However, as I start to scroll for the kinds of news one could access in it, it is really not for children or people who are below 18 years old. There are lots of instances where it has to be pixelized or not to be shown at all. There are lots of news about crime and sex. This is very complicated though, just because there isn’t any law and ethics specifically for the internet doesn’t mean one is allowed to post anything on the internet. As a media practitioner and a person, one should always be sensitive on who can see your post and if the audience really need to see what you’ve post or if it’s better not existing at all.

What is more alarming is that, there is also TomoNews US, France, Mexico, Russia, Japan, Hong Kong, Poland, Korea, and Germany. And just like the Tomo News Ph, it has the same content but with different language and subject matter since what happens in the Philippines doesn’t happen in other countries too.
